Ad film-maker Prahlad Kakkar feels that though the magic of Elvis is spread the world over, its influence is not seen as much in India as in the West. But he doesn’t deny the charm of the King. “Everything about Elvis was larger than life — his songs, his hip-shaking act with the guitar, his hairstyle and his philosophy,” he says.The hairstyles of Elvis were drastic, perhaps too drastic for cautious Indians. Hairstylist Sapna Bhavnani, who grew up in the US and is a big fan of the King, rues that in the past seven years since she has moved to the city she has only seen but one Elvis impersonator. “When I was in the US, I would see Elvis impersonators in every other public place. The clout of Elvis was so huge there that they have adventure sports where people dressed up like Elvis and jumped out of planes. I once jumped out of a plane with 15 Elvis impersonators,” she recalls, adding, “I have come across clients in India who thought about having an Elvis-like hair do. But then couldn’t go ahead with it because they were worried and scared about what people would say about them.”
